Solar roof ventilation in Caloundra

The Kimberley KSV300, from the Passage to Little Mountain.

Sol Coast Construction supplies and installs the Australian-made Kimberley KSV300 solar roof ventilator in Caloundra and the surrounding suburbs, on Colorbond and tiled roofs, from $900 installed. It runs on sunlight, so it works hardest when your roof is hottest, and it goes into the same opening as most whirlybirds. Licensed carpenter, QBCC licensed and insured, Kimberley warranty of 24 months on the motor and 5 years on the chassis, fixed written quote before any work starts.

Why Caloundra roofs need a powered vent

Caloundra is a town of two roof types. Along the old beaches, Dicky, Moffat, Shelly and Golden Beach, the homes are largely brick-and-tile or older timber with big roof spaces that hold heat and, through the wet months, moisture. Across the canals at Pelican Waters and inland at Little Mountain, Aroona and Caloundra West the homes are newer, Colorbond, low-pitched and largely unshaded. The first type holds the heat all evening; the second gets there by lunchtime. Both are hotter than you think on a still day, because the Caloundra sea breeze is a late-afternoon event and the roof has been baking since morning.

The Kimberley KSV300 suits both. It runs on the sun, so it is at full speed through the still part of the day when a whirlybird is idle, and its thermostat keeps it off below about 20 °C so a winter roof keeps its warmth. On the beachside streets its galvanised chassis, nylon fan and sealed IP68 motor shrug off the salt that eventually rusts and rattles a whirlybird.

Bribie Island, across the Passage, is the southern end of our run and is quoted and installed the same way.

Caloundra solar roof ventilation questions

Do you install solar roof vents on the canal homes at Pelican Waters?

Short answer: Yes. The newer Colorbond homes at Pelican Waters are a routine install, flashed under the ridge capping and sealed.

Detailed: Pelican Waters roofs are low-pitched, often light-toned and close to salt water. The KSV300 is galvanised with a nylon fan and a sealed motor, and comes in white as well as black, so it can match a light roof.

Can you fit one to an older tiled home in Caloundra?

Short answer: Yes. We lift a few tiles, fix the unit to the battens, trim the tiles back around the base and seal the edges.

Detailed: The brick-and-tile homes along Dicky Beach, Moffat Beach and Golden Beach have deep roof spaces that hold heat and moisture, which is where a daily purge of the cavity does the most good. If there is an old whirlybird on the north slope we usually replace it in the same opening.

Do you go to Bribie Island?

Short answer: Yes. Bribie Island is the southern end of our Sunshine Coast run and is quoted and installed the same way.

Detailed: We install from Gympie to Bribie Island and across North Brisbane. Tell us your suburb when you enquire and we will quote from your details and give you a date.

Little Mountain is hotter than the beach. Does that change the install?

Short answer: No, it makes the case stronger. A still, hot inland afternoon is when a whirlybird stops and a solar ventilator is at full speed.

Detailed: Little Mountain, Aroona and Caloundra West miss much of the sea breeze. One KSV300 covers up to 240 square metres of floor area under the roof; larger homes, or a home with a garage to duct, may take two, and the AC model keeps running on mains at night.

Replacing a whirlybird? Our guide to whirlybird replacement on the Sunshine Coast walks through the swap. A roof screw replacement or a Kimberley attic ladder is easily done on the same visit.
